Maybe you're starting a scrap blanket pattern (like my Coziest Memory blanket) or maybe you just really like tiny, cute things. Either way, mini skeins are undeniable catnip for most knitters. But where the heck do you start looking for them?
Start with your friends!
My first few swaps were with knitter friends I'd met via my podcast, Ravelry, and my local yarn store. It never hurts to ask these folks if they'd be willing to swap minis with you! You could even sweeten the deal by offering to send them some extra goodies. I've been sent minis by friends who had extra yarn from various projects without asking for anything in return, but I always love a swap too! Don't be shy, ask your friends.
Swap groups on Ravelry
The Junkyarn Podcast group just recently had a mini skein swap (a few of the packaged from which are shown above!) and I know that plenty of other podcasters and YouTubers sometimes arrange swaps. Additionally, some Ravelry groups are set up just for mini skein swappage. I haven't explored this option, but groups like Sock Yarn Swappers and MiniMall have regular threads for swappers to get in touch with each other easily and swap minis.
Purchase your minis
Many indie dyers have caught on to the mini skein trend. Andre Sue Knits, Knitty and Color, Havirland, and more all frequently stock their shops with mini skein sets at a reasonable price considering how much yarn you end up with (usually the equivalent of a whole skein of sock yarn, if not more). This is a great way to try out a new-to-you indie dyer's yarns without having to choose just one colorway! And isn't a surprise in your mailbox just great?
Some online retailers like Jimmy Beans Wool offer skeinette or mini skein grab bags of widely known brands like Koigu KPPPM. Eat Sleep Knit sells mini skein sets from Sweet Georgia Yarns, Koigu and Madelinetosh Unicorn Tails. Additionally, some Etsy sellers like Handmade by Stefanie also sell mini skeins from various dyers in grab bags. Just search for mini skeins and see what comes up!
Share the love!
Many mini skeins come with at least 10g of yarn, so save whatever you don't use for your scrappy project to send to a friend later on!
